What is Medical Massage?
Medical massage, different in its goals & approach than wellness massage, requires
extensive studying, apprenticing and clinical expertise. With this style of technical bodywork,
there is more of a problem solving approach between the client & practitioner. Medical
massage often works with acute & chronic soft tissue & pain challenges. A
seasoned medical massage therapist can be a great support in
relieving a broad spectrum of tendomuscular & connective
tissue injuries, if it is prescribed by a primary health
practitioner.
In the last few years, medical massage has established itself & gained popularity as
one of American specialized modalities of bodywork. This technical form of bodywork has
been highly developed in Europe & Russia for over 40 years.
It's utilized extensively with athletic teams & in some
physical therapy or sports clinics. As an advanced form of
therapeutic bodywork, medical massage is delivered in a
medical setting, under the prescription of a medical doctor
or other primary health care providers such as, osteopaths,
surgeons, chiropractors, naturopathic physicians &
nurse practitioners.
What Makes Medical Massage Unique?
In this medical massage practice, I help clients in their
healing and recovery from a multitude of acute or long
standing soft tissue injuries caused by sport activities,
car accidents or on the job hazards. I use a variety of
advanced clinical technology for muscular & connective
tissue rehabilitation. Look to me as a body detective,
investigating & palpating injured or fibrotic tissue &
adhesions, inflamed joints & muscles & muscular blockages
for pathological clues, till I get to the root source of
many tendomuscular challenges. Medical massage often
combines multiple disciplines to allow for better clinical
results. One patient may need a combination of myofascial
release, trigger point therapy & stretching of the muscles,
while another requires lymphatic drainage, and the next may
respond better with craniosacral therapy.
Learning and effectively applying medical massage skills
takes many diligent years of continuing education. To bypass
symptoms, to get to the root cause of neuromuscular
challenges requires arduous inquiry, patience & a deep
desire to refine one's clinical skills. Seasoned
practitioners experiment with various techniques to unravel
the perplexing challenges of acute & chronic pain patterns.

Tangible outcomes and therapeutic progress are charted and essential for third party/ insurance reimbursement. Medical charting, documentation & insurance billing can take 5 - 10 minutes per treatment. Medical massage treatments can vary from a brief 15 minutes to more in depth 60 minutes, set up in a series of treatments, 1 to 3 times per week, depending on the severity of the condition. With some chronic, long-standing health issues, insurance reimbursement may not be available. The verification process done before your first treatment will check into what your health plan covers, for what medical conditions and for how many treatments.
Health care network insurance providers, along with many primary health practitioners make referrals to medical massage clinics. Medical massage therapists work in liaison with orthopedic surgeons, osteopaths, podiatrists, naturopathic physicians, chiropractors and physical therapists. A verification process must be cleared between you, the client, and your private medical insurance plan before a series of prescribed treatments can be followed up on. Some clients can get insurance coverage for treatments; others must pay out of their pocket.
Keep in mind that with some chronic, long standing issues,
insurance reimbursement may not be available. Each
patient must get clarification with their insurance company
as to whether they can get coverage for medical massage.
This is called the verification process. The patient checks
into what their medical plan covers, for what conditions and
for how many treatments. Our clinic will mail
you the appropriate questions to ask your insurance company
for our billing service. Please request these from us by calling our office.
Until this process is completed, there is no
guarantee that your insurance company & health plan will
cover this health service. Our clinic does cover most of the
major insurance companies but each health plan is unique.
